Here we’re showing how to turn wooden tool handles, in this case for carving chisels with both a The stock used are ash hardwood dowel rods of 35-mm diameter. Each handle is turned using standard spindle-turning tools, with the handle tapering towards the ends. The tenon for a socket-type chisel must fit precisely, requiring frequent…
Turned Projects
This post includes projects produced primarily on a lathe, especially bowls, utensils and other functional items. In addition to the lathe and band saw, the toolset is modest: a set of woodturning gouges and scrapers, faceplate, four-jaw chuck, and a bench grinder.
Removable Roof Window
This window was be fitted into an inclined roof, requiring angled horizontal rabbets. The square vertical rabbets are formed by attaching a separate piece of molding (glued on, with central plywood spline for reinforcement). The frame features mortise-and-tenon joints with panel groove. The window pane is secured with molding on both sides (glued-on on one…
Adjustable Benchpress
To achieve a rigid and sturdy construction, the legs attach to the bench body via T-bridle joints (CZ ‘zahrdleni/rozvor s cepem’). The backrest incline is adjustable to allow for a range of exercises.
Self-Dispensing Bird Feeder
This granary-inspired, self-dispensing bird feeder features a turned block for connecting the feeder to the post, inclined plates (acrylic, for easy inspection of contents volume) fitted in the grooves in side panels, and positioned slightly above the floor to allow for grain dispensing, tenon side panels, secured with hard-wood wedges in the floor, glued-up floor…
Bench Restoration
We flattened the warped top using a traditional restoration technique, and stabilized the top (to prevent future warping) by adding both side stabilizers (pegged mortise and tenon, with peg holes elliptical to allow for wood movement) and bottom stabilizers (sliding dovetails). The damaged leg parts were replaced with loose-tenon prostheses and shaped to final form.
Saloon Doors
These double swinging doors feature a simple frame-and-panel design, and a top stop block that slides on horizontal plywood rails. A hollow chisel mortiser simplified the production. The intended function was to facilitate passage to humans while denying passage to a dog.
Outdoor Cooking
For outdoor cooking in a pot over campfire, we need a solid bench, a sturdy lid, and a stir paddle. Built with basic hand tools and an angle grinder.
