While originally writen for piano and violoncello, this piece was orchestrated as a retrosynth (synthwave) composition, paying respect to the 1980s film soundtracks and video games. The instruments are based on free VST plugins featuring vintage 80s sounds and synthesizers, namely:
- verse lead 1: TAL NoiseMaker (KB Big synth)
- verse lead 2: SQ8L (R39 — Sq bell)
- chorus lead 1: SQ8L (R1 — Brassy)
- chorus lead 2: TAL NoiseMaker (KB Glockenschlag)
- pad strings: TAL NoiseMaker (PD Bit Orchestra)
- drums: Vintage Drum Elements (Yamaha RX5 Kit 2)
- bass: SQ8L (R53 — AT-STR)
Additional free VST plugins used include:
- piano: Creepy Piano (Coffinrot)
- guitar: MF Concert Guitar
The piece modulates between D minor and E flat major, with the two melodies played by the leads revolving around tonic and dominant, with occasional subdominant and submediant chords. The bass plays the roots of the chord progressions as an ostinato, the vintage Yamaha drum kit alternates between two grooves played by kick, high-hat, snare and cymbals, with transitions filled in by toms. The first two introductory piano measures are subject to automation envelopes with reverberation and parametric equalization.
