After a short introductory oboe section, the piece presents the two main themes: the first, starting at m. 21, is composed in the Lydian mode, while the second, starting at m. 73, is based on the circle of fifths progressions. Dialogues between winds and string sections unfold throughout to provide contrasting colors. In the repeat section starting at m. 51 the motive is varied among the solo members of the winds, with the rhythm and harmonies strengthened by tympani pedals and string ostinatos (measured tremolos), before concluding with a cadential tutti phrase separating the two themes. The main melodies in winds and strings are accompanied by, respectively, pizzicato strings and off-the-beat staccatos winds, joined by lean brass (French horn and trombone) to add weight to the climaxes. The double bass is not used to keep the bass line light, with richness and resonance provided by cellos and violas instead. Occasional chromatic harmonies use e.g. augmented triads and suspended chords.
